  Dear Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries,

  I am deeply concerned about the millions of dogs caught up in Cambodia’s brutal meat trade, leading to immense animal suffering, illegal activities, and serious human and animal health risks.

  Each year, an estimated 3 million dogs are captured, transported, and slaughtered under horrific conditions. Many are stolen pets, snatched from their homes and crammed into cages without food or water, only to be inhumanely killed through electrocution, blowtorching, and drowning.

  This trade is not only inhumane but also dangerous. Studies have shown that rabies outbreaks and the spread of zoonotic diseases are directly linked to the handling and slaughter of dogs for meat. The illegal pet theft industry associated with this trade has led to rising crime, endangering communities.

  According to a FOUR PAWS survey in 2019, only 12% of Cambodians regularly eat dog meat. Furthermore, findings from a survey conducted across Cambodia in early 2021 underscore the urgent need to stop this trade. The survey revealed the following key points:

  • 86% of Cambodians oppose the dog meat trade.
  • 90% of Cambodians support a complete ban on the trade.
  • 94% believe that dog meat consumption is not part of Cambodian culture and do not want this trade to continue.

   

  Cambodia has already taken positive steps in protecting animals and public health, with Siem Reap banning the dog meat trade in 2020. However, without a national ban, this cruel and illegal trade continues to thrive.

  I respectfully request His Excellency to collaborate with other government agencies to address the concerns of most Cambodian people and take national action to stop the dog meat trade. This would contribute significantly to protecting the Cambodian people and their pets. The Cambodian people have spoken clearly—they do not want this trade in their country. The time to act is now.
