The ugly truth behind the dog meat trade

FOUR PAWS, as a member of the Dog Meat Free Indonesia Coalition, calls on the Indonesian government to ban trade and slaughter of dogs for human consumption.

Dogs are some of our most loyal companions and members of the family, bringing us so much joy and love.

Now imagine if your beloved family member was stolen from your home or while out on a walk with him or her only to be killed for meat… Sadly, this happens everyday in countries throughout Asia and it breaks their families’ hearts. In Indonesia alone, more than one million stray and pet dogs are stolen and transported throughout the country to supply dog-meat restaurants, slaughterhouses and markets.

Captured dogs are packed tightly into cages and sacks, their mouths bound shut so they can barely breathe.

The journey can last days, sometimes spanning hundreds of kilometers.  Many dogs don’t even survive the journey dying from suffocation, dehydration, and heatstroke. At their final destination, the survivors watch other dogs being brutally killed in filthy slaughterhouses, while they await their turn.

The dog meat trade is not only incredibly cruel for the animals, but also very dangerous to humans.

It encourages the mass unregulated movement of dogs of unknown disease and vaccination status. It is estimated that approximately 1% of the slaughtered dogs are infected with rabies. Human deaths have been reportedly linked with the slaughtering and even consumption of infected meat. Therefore, this is not only an animal - but also a human welfare issue!

FOUR PAWS is committed to seeing an end to the cruel dog and cat meat trade.
